The one thing we can be certain of in life is that change is inevitable, but not always welcome. When I speak with new clients, significant change is almost always happening in their lives. It’s often the reason they connect with me.
I’m often asked how, as a coach or therapist, I can help people to successfully navigate change. Over the years, I’ve read several books on life transition. One of the stand out, common themes is that all change begins with grief….. even positive change!
Does this mean we are devastated by a job promotion or selling of a business? No, but these are significant changes which often fundamentally shift how we see ourselves. That’s especially true when we believe that we’ll only be happy if we secure that promotion, or that business sale goes through. People often struggle to reconcile who they thought they would be or how they thought they would feel versus how they actually see themselves and how they actually feel.
We all know that some changes are hard. Unexpected breakups, the death of a loved one, an unexpected illness are all events that disrupt our lives. Depending on how we respond, that disruption can de-rail us or help us to grow.
Guiding people through the chaos that accompanies change is something I have done for many years. I’ve helped numerous people emerge from the chaos and land on their feet, so to speak, rather than spin out of control. Here are some practical ways that I help.
**Clarifying Goals and Vision**: Together, we define what you want your life to look like post-transition, whether it’s a career change, retirement, moving to a new city, or any significant shift. This involves setting clear, achievable goals and then strategizing how to best to achieve them within the context of your life.
**Emotional Support**: Transitions are often accompanied by emotional turmoil, for instance, stress, anxiety or grief for what we are leaving behind. A skilled and experienced therapist provides you with a safe space to express emotions so that you can better understand and work through them.
**Action Planning**: A coach or a therapist empowers you to break down your goals into actionable steps. Together we create a roadmap for your transition, including timelines, milestones, and accountability measures.
**Skill Development**: I assist in identifying and developing the key skills you might need for this new phase of life. They might include communication skills in a new job, or coping mechanisms in unfamiliar social environments. These newly developed skills equip you to move more effectively and easily from one change to another.
**Challenging Negative Beliefs**: Both therapists and coaches can help challenge and reframe negative or limiting beliefs that might be holding you back from embracing your transition fully.
**Building Resilience**: Life transitions test our resilience. Your therapist will teach you strategies for resilience, including mindfulness, stress management techniques, or cognitive-behavioral approaches to help you to deal with setbacks.
**Accountability**: Regular coaching sessions provide accountability, and keep you on track towards your new life phase.
**Perspective**: Sometimes, being too close to a situation can cloud our judgment. A coach or therapist offers an outside perspective, helping you see options or solutions you might have overlooked.
**Navigating Identity Changes**: Transitions often affect how we see ourselves. Therapy plays a crucial part in exploring and reconstructing your identity or self-concept during such times.
**Support Network**: Robust support networks are vital when navigating major life change. Therapists offer guidance to enable you to build or strengthen your support network.
Remember, while a life coach might focus more on the practical steps towards achieving your goals, a therapist often delves deeper into psychological aspects. This vital process helps you to identify and gently respond to emotions, past traumas, or mental health issues that might be influencing your transition.
